Impressionism

Impressionism is developed in France in the nineteenth century. The style is based on painting outdoors rather than in studio from sketches. A main impressionist subject is landscapes. The artist really paints what he or she sees, without thinking what it normally looks like. That is also why sometimes objects have a strange colour. For instance, where water normally is painted in blue, in an impressionist painting it can also be green or orange. In impressionism only primary colours were used and the reflected light was very important.
